Assessment The Student Assessment Guide and Learning Plan describes the evidence required to be competent in this unit. You can track your progress by comparing it against unit requirements and at every stage of your learning and study. You can also get support from your iTAFE mentor and advisor.

Study Guide
There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the Ensure children’s health and safety unit. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.

Session 1-  Supporting health needs- Blue tiles
• National Quality Framework
• National Quality Standards
• The Early Years learning Framework
• Organisational standards, policies and procedures
• Consistently supported the health needs of the children in the service
• Contributing to the provision of a clean and safe environment
• How children’s oral health impacts on their general health and well-being, including signs of tooth decay

A few points to think about for your blog:
How do you communicate with families about children’s health needs?
How do you ensure a safe and clean environment  for all children, staff, parents and visitors?

Session 2- Pink tiles 
• Children’s requirements for sleep and rest
• Environments that promote rest and sleep including light, noise, temperature and ventilation requirements
• Respecting children's needs for privacy during any toileting and dressing
• Ensuring children's and families individual clothing needs are met
• Sharing information about individual children's rest and sleep with families

A few points to think about for your blog:
In your service what information do you share with families about their child’s rest and sleep times? How do you share this information?
How do you promote an environment that is conducive to rest?

Session 3- Purple tiles 
• Developing children’s awareness of safety
• Safety issues and risk management strategies for children’s health and safety in a variety of contexts
• Basic home fire safety including high-risk groups, behaviour that contributes to fire injury and fatalities, and smoke alarm placement, installation and maintenance
• How to undertake a risk analysis of toys and equipment
• Potential hazards to children, including medical conditions

What is a safety checklist?
When should a safety checklist be carried out in an education and care service?
How do you promte children's awareness of safety?

Session 4- Orange tiles 
• Recognising and responding to signs of illness of children, including signs and symptoms of asthma and anaphylaxis
• Reading and interpreting authorisation forms, medication labels, medical management plans and other relevant medical information
• Signs, symptoms and key characteristics of allergy/anaphylaxis
• Signs, symptoms and key characteristics of asthma
• How to use an adrenalin auto injector for anaphylaxis

What are the signs and symptoms for  anaphylaxis?
What is your centre's procedure for responding to signs of illness?
What are the steps required when administering medication at your centre?
